Altitude
The village of Ruidoso, NM sits at 6900 feet above sea level. Animals coming from significantly lower altitudes, especially older animals and those with known heart conditions may be adversely affected due to decreased oxygen levels in the air.
Rattlesnake Bites
A vaccination against Rattlesnake venom is now available for dogs. We recommend this annual vaccination for dogs living in areas where they are likely to come in contact with these snakes.
Deer Attacks
A Mule Deer doe, especially with a fawn nearby, can be very aggressive toward dogs. Small dogs can be severely injured or killed by an attack from a protective doe.
Skunks
Being sprayed by a skunk can be very unpleasant. To help remove the odor, we recommend a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from a pharmacy), 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon liquid soap. Keep mixture out of eyes, nose and mouth. Allow to sit on animal 10 minutes then rinse thoroughly with tap water.
Porcupine Quills
Porcupine quills are very painful and can be difficult to remove if implanted in the nose and mouth. If a quill is left embedded, severe or fatal infection may develop. A thorough examination by your veterinarian is recommended if your pet has had an encounter with a porcupine.
